The Dr. School of History of Veterinary Medicine began in 1884 at the University of Missouri, with Dr. William H. Davenport as its first dean.

He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science and graduated with honors from Virginia Tech's School of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. He taught veterinary anatomy, histology and neuroscience for four years before returning to his alma mater, Virginia Tech, as a faculty member. Dr. Felz decided to do an internship at the Veterinary Medical Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington, D.C., and subsequently worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Animal and Plant Health Sciences, where he gained extensive experience in animal biology, genetics, and animal physiology.
We serve as a tertiary referral and teaching hospital for private clients in the surrounding counties and Ames. We can also provide limited services to private businesses, which are managed by the ISU Veterinary Field Services department. When a veterinarian references a private individual, he can refer the case to an animal hospital in Ames or to any of the surrounding states such as Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota or Wyoming.
